What are Eyelash Extensions?

Lash extensions are mink, synthetic or horsehair fibres which are used to enhance or lengthen your natural eyelashes. They can also be used to add curl, fullness or definition to existing lashes. On Asian eyes with hooded eyelids, lash extensions can help open up the almond shade of the eye and create a more alert, wide-eyed look.

Which Types of Eyelash Extensions are the Best Quality?

Mink and silk eyelash extensions are the most common types, although in terms of quality, each has its own features and appeal based on the desired end-result of individual clients. One main difference between the two is not the quality, but the shape, finish and weight of the extensions. Silk lashes have a short taper, look thicker for a longer period of time and have a semi-gloss finish, while mink lashes adhere to natural lashes better and create a soft, natural look.

How are Eyelash Extensions Applied?

An adhesive glue made specifically for eyelash extensions is used to apply for lash extensions directly onto natural eyelashes. Lashes can be applied individually, or in groups called fans.

Classic lashes are applied using a 1:1 ratio of one lash extension applied to one natural lash. Hybrid lashes, also called a mixed set, are classic lashes and volume fan lashes mixed together to create a thicker and denser look compared to classic lashes. Volume lashes are 2 to 6 thin eyelash extensions per fan and allow for full, fluffy lashes. Mega volume lashes are 10 or more super-thin eyelash extensions grouped together. Lash technicians can purchase or create custom pre-made fans which are arranged on a sticker strip for quick and easy application.

How Long do Eyelash Extensions Last and Are they Worth It?

Typically, eyelash extensions are not permanent and can last six to eight weeks based on the average person’s lash growth cycle. Keeping in mind that each person’s lashes grow slightly differently, it’s often recommended that lash extensions be maintained every three to four weeks. Ultimately, this will mean less time and money spent during lash fill appointments, and happier customers.

If you’re a busy mom, a professional on the go or if you’re about to go on a vacation, lash extensions are definitely worth it since they will help you save time each morning during your beauty routine. Plus, you won’t have to purchase and apply mascara; simply dust on some eyeshadow or create your favourite cat eye look, and head out the door.

Are Eyelash Extensions Bad for your Natural Lashes?

A common myth is that lash extensions ruin your natural lashes. Truthfully, if applied professionally by an experienced lash technician, eyelash extensions will not affect the health or growth of your natural lashes. To prevent damage to lash roots, it’s important not to rub or pull on extensions, as this will cause premature fallout and disrupt both the natural lashes and extensions.

How Much do Eyelash Extensions Cost?

The cost of eyelash extensions varies depending on the type of material used, how many extensions are used during your appointment and the level of your lash extension tech’s experience. These factors determine whether your lash and fill appointments are expensive or relatively cheap. Generally, an initial full set of lash extensions can cost anywhere between $150 to $200+, and regular maintenance fills can cost $55-$65+ depending on how many lash extensions have been shed since your last appointment.

How are Eyelash Extensions Removed?

Eyelash technicians brush a specially designed glue remover on eyelash extensions to gently remove lashes. The glue is left on the lashes for a few minutes, followed by lashes being taken off one by one by clamping them between two micro brushes and gently pulling them off your natural lashes. Your lash tech will use tiny tweezers specifically designed to remove lash extensions with care and precision.
