What is a Brazilian wax?

While many people are familiar with the term bikini wax, what exactly is a Brazilian wax? A Brazilian wax includes removing much more, or the full removal of the hair on a woman’s most sensitive parts, including removing the hair along the vaginal lips and the behind. Some women prefer to leave a small patch of hair behind in the shape of a triangle or other shape. Ladies Brazilian waxes are common at mid to high-end spas, while it may take a bit more research to find a salon that offers male Brazilian waxing.

What does a Brazilian wax look like?

There’s plenty of salon lingo to try to confuse you, but the shape of the hair at the front is completely up to you. A classic option is a landing strip, which is a small square shaped patch of hair. You can ask your wax provider for any shape you like, and a few other popular shapes include the bermuda triangle or the desert island.

How to prepare for a Brazilian wax?

Definitely shower before your waxing appointment, and make sure that your pubic hair is at least a quarter of an inch long, or about 10-14 days of growth so that it adheres to the wax properly. In  between sessions, resist the urge to shave. Instead, gently exfoliate the night before a waxing appointment, or take a warm bath to prepare your skin. Arrive to your appointment as relaxed as possible, take a few deep breaths and trust that you are in the capable hands of a trained professional. Especially if it’s your first time, consider taking an Advil 20 minutes before your appointment if you’re worried you won’t handle the pain well. In the end, a few minutes of pain or discomfort will be worth it if it means skipping shaving in the showe for a few weeks.

What happens during a Brazilian wax?

If your waxer is an experienced professional, they’ll get the job done fast, meaning less time spent at the appointment and less discomfort. A wooden waxing stick will be dipped into a pot of hot wax, then spread onto your skin and hair in the direction of the hair growth. Next, a cloth strip will be applied and pressed firmly into the freshly applied wax. Once it’s properly adhered to the hair, your waxing tech will quickly pull the cloth strip off. It’s best to let a deep breath out during this step and to relax afterwards. You’ll be asked to lay in various positions on the waxing table in order for the waxer to effectively reach creases and hard to see places, so don’t be shy and remember that they’ve seen it all before.

How long does a Brazilian wax last?

Generally, a Brazilian wax can last 3 to 6 weeks. If you’re a first time client, you’ll probably notice that your hair regrowth is minimal during the first 1 to 2 weeks and that it steadily increased during week 3 to 4 and beyond.

How can I make a Brazilian wax less painful?

Start small, and ask for a partial Brazilian wax if it’s your first time. Apply a numbing cream before your appointment, or take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you have a  really low pain tolerance.

How much does a Brazilian wax cost?

At a reputable salon or day spa, a Brazilian wax treatment can cost between $50 to $120 plus taxes and a tip. If the price is $20 or less, do your own research and read reviews before booking an appointment so you can be sure you’re putting yourself in the hands of experienced spa professionals. Pay attention to whether the salon uses high quality wax, and if they double dip, and steer clear of salons that use cheap roll-on waxes. Also, take a look around the spa space and make sure it looks and smells clean. While $20 might seem like a great bargain for a Brazilian wax, it won’t seem like a bargain if you end up getting injured or burned by a low quality wax and an inexperienced wax tech.

Lastly, your waxer should be highly recommended, licensed and able to effectively communicate in your language. Familiarize yourself with spas in your area, and choose a wax professional who performs a lot of waxes and is consistently busy and booked with loyal repeat clients.

What is the difference between a bikini and Brazilian wax?

A bikini wax is one step from a full Brazilian wax. While a Brazilian wax removes all hair from the frontal part of your bikini area, all the way back and everywhere in between, a bikini wax focuses on the top and sides to achieve a neat and cleaned-up look that’s perfect for wearing bikinis on a beach vacation. You can also ask for a full bikini wax, which removes hair further along the bikini line and is best for swimwear that is a bit more revealing.
